Music…Sweet Music, Inc. was founded in 2001 to provide music therapy sessions to children in need. As a professional musician and prior to founding the organization, I spent many of my off-work hours performing for hospitalized children. And I could see the difference that music made in their attitude, how it calmed them and reduced their stress, and how they – at least for a short time – were removed from their surroundings and able to be kids again. I, like many people in this part of the country, had no real appreciation for music therapy or “music as medicine”. Until my first visit at All Children’s Hospital, St. Petersburg, that is, and my introduction to their staff certified music therapist. I learned the difference between entertaining, teaching and therapy. I was so intrigued that I started to research the field.

Dr. Oliver Sacks, a renowned neurologist, psychologist and author (Awakenings, among other books) at Columbia University Medical Center has said, “The power of music is very remarkable… I think that music therapy and music therapists are crucial and indispensable in institutions…”

I have performed as a musician and taught students how to play music, but I leave the prescribed use of music as medicine to qualified therapists. What changes I have seen in people as I perform is far removed from the positive changes in the psychological, physical, cognitive and/or social functioning of individuals with health or educational problems effected by music therapists. Music…Sweet Music is making a difference, enhancing lives through the power of music.

Music…Sweet Music is dedicated to those we serve. A relatively high percentage of our hospitalized children never make it to adulthood. But our certified music therapists provide an important element, a type of specialized music psychotherapy, that allows our children to communicate more freely and improve the quality of even a short lived life.

Finally, we give our sincere thanks to those who have supported Music…Sweet Music through the years. Your support has enabled us to bring about real and positive change. Together we are making a difference. Together we will continue to make a difference.
